The visual arts curriculum encourages personal expression and includes cognitive and motor skill development. A wall of windows allows natural light as the students listen to various genres of music to encourage the creative process. The program guides the students in the two main areas of the discipline: art history and art making. Multi-cultural and cross-curricula projects are incorporated into the curriculum. Beginning in Junior Kindergarten, students work with multiple mediums in our modern studio, including paint, sculpture, clay, photography, and more. Our upper level students learn firing techniques when working with the kiln in the studio.
SBA also offers an after school Art Club open to all 1st Level through 8th Level students. In the Art Club, students create art and exhibit their work in Hillsboro Village and other community locations. They also exhibit the art as part of community events such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Day march.
The music program empowers students to engage in music actively through singing and performing. Music instruction in Levels 1-8 includes guitar, recorders, vocal instruction, composition, percussion, instrumental, and rhythm components.
Private piano instruction is offered during the school day. The students are allowed to miss one-half of a non-core class (P.E., art, resource, etc.). Students meet with the teacher weekly and give two performances during the academic year. Piano students are taught to read music and music theory. All styles of music are taught depending on the interest of the child. Our piano teacher has a degree in Music Education and has taught locally for 40 years, including 25 at SBA.
Guitar lessons are also offered for students who are interested in learning this stringed instrument. In addition to acoustic guitar, students can choose to take lessons in electric guitar, mandolin, and banjo. Our guitar teacher is also a recognized songwriter in Nashville and you can often find her playing in the round at the Bluebird Cafe!
Our choir director, Emily Hopkins, a member of the Nashville Opera, offers choir to all grade levels. The choir meets one hour per week after school. This is yet another performance opportunity for those interested in vocal music.
Students in Levels 5-8 who are interested in joining band learn the basics of woodwind, percussion, and brass instruments. Participation in band teaches students the value of music and teamwork. The band is directed by the band directors from the nationally award winning Father Ryan High School Irish Marching Band. The band gives two performances a year: one during Christmas season at Mary Queen of Angels and one in the Spring for the school student body and their parents.
Several productions are available for students that are interested in Drama to participate in throughout the school year. First Level students present the Nativity Christmas Pageant, Fourth Level students present an annual play, and students in all levels can audition for the all-school production each year.
