Health Center
At St. Bernard Academy, supporting the physical health of our students, faculty, and staff is a top priority.
Our full-time, on-site, Registered Nurse manages the health needs of our campus, including the new challenges associated with COVID-19.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- If you or your child are not feeling well or are showing COVID-like symptoms, please stay home and contact Nurse Lauren for next steps.
- If your child or anyone in your household has a pending COVID-19 test or has been identified as a close contact, please stay home and contact Nurse Lauren for next steps.
- Your child will need to see a healthcare provider for possible COVID-19 if they have 1 high-risk symptom or 2+ low-risk symptoms. High-risk symptoms include fever (100.4° or higher), new cough, shortness of breath, trouble breathing, and new loss of taste or smell. Low-risk symptoms include chills, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, runny nose, congestion, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
- Please note that the CDC has changed their definition of a close contact and SBA will be following this guidance. A close contact is now defined as being within six feet of a person with COVID-19 for a cumulative 15 minutes or longer within a 24 hour period. This is different from the previous definition, which labeled a close contact as someone within six feet for 15 consecutive minutes.
- As of December 3, 2020, SBA has updated its quarantine and isolation policies to reflect the new guidelines announced by the CDC. See the "Quarantine or Isolation" tab below for complete details.

VUMC COVID-19 Research Study
SBA is fortunate to participate in a research study to determine the rates of COVID-19 transmission in schools that re-open for in-person classes when strict safety measures are in place. This study, Impact of school reopening on COVID-19 transmission among children, is led by Dr. Sophie Katz, MD, MPH, of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and tracks the number of symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 infections among enrolled students and faculty. Saliva (spit) samples for COVID-19 are tested every other week in all consenting participants who are attending school.

General Health Information
Despite the current prevalence of COVID-19, general health issues and illnesses still persist. We are strongly recommending all members of the SBA community (faculty, staff, students, and family members) receive flu shots this year. Many locations including CVS, Walgreens, Target, and Publix, as well as your family doctor, offer the flu vaccine for free.
