Fine Arts

At St. Bernard Academy, we believe that developing an appreciation for the fine arts starts early and contributes to overall student success inside and outside the classroom.

Beginning in Junior Kindergarten, music and art classes are incorporated directly into the daily curriculum. Students who express additional interest are also encouraged to participate by joining an extracurricular fine arts offering or taking private lessons. Our fine arts teachers and directors have combined experience of more than 85 years, and strive to foster a love for the arts in every student they teach.

Visual Arts

The visual arts program encourages personal expression and guides students in the two main areas of the discipline: art history and art making. Multi-cultural and cross-curricula projects are incorporated into the curriculum. Beginning in Junior Kindergarten, students work with multiple mediums in our modern studio, including paint, sculpture, clay, photography, and more. Our upper level students also learn firing techniques when working with the kiln in the studio.

Music

The music program empowers students to engage in music actively. Music instruction for JK - 8th Level includes vocal instruction and performance, percussion, guitar, recorders, and rhythm components with additional lessons in music theory, composition, and music history. All students participate in concerts throughout the year.

Choir

Students in lower and upper levels may select choir as an after school elective, where additional lessons in vocal technique and performance, part singing, and music repertoire will be taught. Choirs will also assist in leading Mass and perform in additional concerts throughout the year.

Theatre

Several opportunities are available for students interested in drama: First Level students present the Nativity Christmas Pageant, Fourth Level students present an annual play, and students in all levels can audition for the all-school production each year. Recent all-school productions have included Annie, Jr. (2018) and The Wacky Wizard of Oz (2019).

Private Music Lessons

At St. Bernard Academy, we partner with some of the best private music lesson teachers across Nashville to offer students lessons on a variety of instruments including piano, voice, acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, violin, and drums. Lessons are scheduled directly with the teacher and are offered weekly during and after school. Performances are given throughout the academic year.

The arts inspire children to be creative, confident, and problem solvers.  They also teach patience, focus, communication skills, self-evaluation, and accountability.
