news and notes

Dear Parents,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you on behalf of the SBA Home & School Association to the 2019-2020 School Year. This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the sale of the school from the Sisters of Mercy to SBA parents! After the May 1989 graduation of the old St. Bernard Academy final senior class, parents of the non-graded academy (levels Kindergarten through 8th) prepared to move from the convent building on 21st Avenue to the high school building. (Maybe you were wondering why we refer to grades as “levels”. For many years the school operated on a “non-graded” system where each child worked at his or her own pace.) Parents spent the summer of 1989 plastering, painting, repairing, and moving furniture, and in August of 1989, Bishop James Niedergeses rededicated the school. Talk about volunteers! Those parents bought the school!

For those of you who are new to St. Bernard Academy, the Home & School Association (HSA) is a parent organization dedicated to the successful education of your children through volunteerism and financial support of the school. Every parent or guardian at SBA is automatically a member of the HSA!

HSA has been working to ensure that this is an enjoyable year for students, parents, and teachers. Room Parents and the Executive Committee have been placing welcome signs in the yards of all our new families, coordinating Back to School events and readying the Swap ‘N’ Shop for business.

Our first All School event this year is the Fall Fair on Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 3:00-7:00 at the Athletic Field. Always a favorite of students and parents alike, this event promises to be a great day of community and celebration with DJ Louis Lee, face painters, a balloon artist, inflatables, a photo booth, cake walk, cheer garden, buffet dinner & the Kona Ice truck! Please mark your calendars!

This year, look for our Parent Education Events. These events are two-fold - The Speaker Series, as well as our upcoming Book Club get togethers. Please refer to the calendar for more information. Our first Speaker Series event is on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 6:00 PM. The topic is “Prevention of Crime & Abuse for Families” lead by SBA parent Jenny Charles, Asst. DA, Davidson County and her team from the Davidson County DA’s office. This event open to the community. We hope to see you there and bring a friend!

HSA meets monthly to discuss HSA business, share ideas and plan future events. Every member is welcome to attend these monthly meetings, which are a great way to get updates on school happenings and to form friendships. Our first meeting is on Thursday September 12th at 6:00 PM, where we will present and vote on the annual budget.

Everything done by HSA is done by volunteers. Every parent is strongly encouraged to volunteer with HSA in order to make our school as successful as it can be. As the year proceeds, you will hear from us on a regular basis with updates on HSA events and opportunities to help. Many hands make light work!

To assist with planning, we have enclosed the HSA calendar. Please note that the annual spring auction will take place on Saturday, April 4, 2019. This is our major fundraiser of the year. It is a great time and it funds all of the wonderful activities you see on the attached calendar. More details to come!

It’s going to be a great year!

SEPTEMBER SELECTION: The Importance of Being Little
Erika Christakis

Monday, September 30
6:00 PM
Book discussion led by Hannah Dwyer

In The Importance of Being Little, Erika Christakis discusses how young children truly learn—specifically, their rich potential for learning and exploring in any environment. She also describes the current methods typically used in preschools and kindergartens and convincingly shows that these methods are falling short of what we truly want for our small children.
