There have been many questions regarding BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) for the coming school year. As a reminder, BYOD is only for students in Levels 2-8. Mr. Russell has put together a list of BYOD minimum requirements to help with purchasing questions:
SBA Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
Minimum Requirements 2020-2021
Windows 10, MacOS, and ChromeOS
CPU Intel i3 or higher, 4GB RAM, 20% free hard drive space free
4GB RAM, 16GB EMMC drive, 11.6 inch screen
- Apple MacBook:
CPU Intel i3 or higher, 4GB RAM, 15% free hard drive space
- Microsoft Surface:
The Microsoft Surfaces do meet the minimum requirements for hardware when running Windows 10 because of the requirements of the operating system.
- Apple iPads:
Some iPads can be used. iPads are a little tedious to type on for an extended period of time, however, some of the newer ones can have a keyboard and I believe the latest iPad Pros function like a full blown Apple MacBook.
There are pros and cons to all the above. Chromebooks being the cheapest, Apple being the most expensive, and Windows laptops being in the middle. School owned devices are not allowed to leave the school campus. The devices brought from home will be added to SBA’s WiFi. This will allow for connection to the shared google drives and Schoology. SBA has a content filter on the network but once the device leaves the school, it is not protected by the school content filter.
If you have a device that is not listed or have any questions please e-mail email@example.com and Randy Russell will respond in the order that requests are received.
