Presented by Ann Patchett '81 and Sister Nena '50

As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. Bernard Academy, we are inspired by the legacy of excellence our predecessors left for us, and challenged to create a meaningful legacy for those who follow us. There is much in our tradition of academic excellence in which to take great pride, but we would argue that nothing is as important as inspiring a lifelong love of reading. Books teach, challenge, entertain, comfort and motivate us. They help us understand our world, and transport us to new ones. Perhaps no one understands this better than best-selling author, local bookstore owner and SBA alumna Ann Patchett (Class of 1981), who credits our beloved first and second level reading teacher Sister Nena with inspiring a love of reading that has carried her to unimaginable literary heights.

“Sister Nena was with me from the very beginning. When I wasn’t reading or writing well as I should, she was the one who helped me to until everything clicked and I could. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be a writer…so it is safe to say my early education at St. Bernard and Sister Nena quite literally shaped my life and who I became.”

But you don’t need to be a professional author to have felt the impact of someone like Sister Nena. Thousands of seven and eight year olds passed through the halls of St. Bernard Academy during Sister Nena’s tenure, and many likely discovered their first love of reading through her example. Sister Nena retired from St. Bernard in 2005, but the students who walk the halls of SBA today still benefit from the legacy she left behind. And now we invite you to be a part of that same legacy, honoring our 150-year commitment to reading and leaving a legacy for our current students – and generations to come – by helping to grow the book collection at our St. Bernard library and the library at Ronald McDonald House.

Here’s how it works: Below you will find 150 books personally selected by Sister Nena and Jen Kitchell, our school librarian that we would like to acquire for our library. We invite you to make a contribution of $150 (for each book you would like to sponsor) as a special gift in honor of the person or people who inspired your own love of reading. We will use these donations to purchase the 150 books for the St. Bernard library and will also purchase the same book to donate to the Ronald McDonald library. We will commemorate your gift with a special nameplate listing your name and your inspiration.

You can have the pleasure of knowing that generations of future SBA students and families will understand your commitment to furthering a proud St. Bernard tradition. Thank you for your continuing support of St. Bernard, its students, teachers and programs. We are truly inspired by you.
